When China recently reopened its borders and began allowing visa-free travel for most Europeans, I knew it was the perfect time to visit again. I booked my flights months in advance, settling for a standard economy class ticket. But as my travel date approached, curiosity got the better of me — how much would it cost to upgrade to business class?
To my surprise, the ticket prices had dropped significantly. The new business class fare was exactly the same as the economy ticket I had purchased earlier. That meant the upgrade was free! It was such a pleasant surprise — something that would rarely, if ever, happen with Western airlines, which often seize every opportunity to charge you an extra hundred euros for even the smallest upgrade. It is worth noting that you can upgrade your ticket online only if you have purchased it directly on China Eastern Airlines website.
This was my first hint that flying with China Eastern Airlines would be something special.
Check-In and Lounge Experience
At the airport, the experience started smoothly and stress-free. China Eastern’s business class check-in area is a world apart from the usual queues of economy passengers. The staff were professional and welcoming, and the entire process was handled with calm efficiency. For some destinations, there’s even a dedicated seating area for business class passengers during check-in — a small touch that makes a big difference after a long journey to the airport.

After checking in, I headed to the China Eastern Lounge, which was another pleasant surprise. The CEA domestic lounges are genuinely well-appointed, with comfortable seating, hot food options, a solid selection of drinks and plenty of space to unwind before your flight. Compared to many Western domestic lounges — which often feel more like crowded waiting rooms — China Eastern’s offering felt refined and relaxing.
The Cabin and Seats
Once onboard, I found my seat in the business class cabin — slightly dated in design, but undeniably comfortable. The seat was wide, with generous legroom and soft padding that made it ideal for reclining and relaxing during the flight.

A large pillow and blanket were waiting at my seat, far more substantial than the flimsy ones often offered in short-haul business class cabins elsewhere. There was also a small amenity kit, including slippers — a thoughtful touch that added a bit of at-home comfort for the journey.

The cabin atmosphere was quiet and relaxed, and it felt like there was a genuine effort to make passengers feel cared for rather than simply transported.

In-Flight Service and Dining
The service on board was exceptional — attentive without being intrusive. The flight attendants were impeccably polite, greeting each passenger personally and offering a welcome drink and a small bag of nuts, even though this was only a domestic flight.

Soon after takeoff, the meal service began, and I was genuinely impressed by the quality and presentation. The menu offered several options — far more variety than most European carriers provide on short or even medium-haul routes. The meal was beautifully plated, flavorful, and filling.

There was also an impressive selection of beverages, from fruit juices to wines and teas, reflecting China’s hospitality and cultural appreciation for good service.

Final Thoughts
My flight with China Eastern Airlines domestic business class turned out to be one of the most enjoyable short flights I’ve ever taken. From the fair upgrade policy to the excellent service, the experience showcased a kind of hospitality that many Western airlines could learn from.
What impressed me most was the sense of genuine value — not luxury for its own sake, but thoughtful touches and fairness that made the journey memorable. If you’re flying within China, I wholeheartedly recommend giving China Eastern Airlines business class a try — even if you think it might be out of reach, check the upgrade prices. You might be as pleasantly surprised as I was.
