Shenzhen Airlines is one of China’s leading full-service carriers and a member of Star Alliance. While domestic economy class is often viewed as a fairly standard experience, my flight completely exceeded expectations. From an unexpectedly exceptional recognition of Star Alliance Gold status to a comfortable cabin and a complimentary meal, this was one of the most memorable domestic economy flights I have ever taken.
Check-in
The check-in process for Shenzhen Airlines domestic flights is straightforward, as all domestic services use the same check-in counters regardless of destination. This makes the airport experience simple and easy to navigate.

Star Alliance Gold members can use the dedicated priority check-in counter, which is shared with Air China. The priority lane was quick and efficient, allowing me to complete check-in without any delays.
Boarding
Boarding was refreshingly uncomplicated. Instead of multiple boarding groups, Shenzhen Airlines used just two queues: one priority lane and one lane for economy class passengers. The process moved quickly and avoided the confusion that often comes with complicated boarding group systems.

An Incredible Star Alliance Gold Experience
The biggest surprise of the entire journey was how exceptionally Shenzhen Airlines treated Star Alliance Gold members. I have held oneworld Emerald status for many years, which is officially a higher alliance tier than Star Alliance Gold, yet I have never experienced recognition anywhere close to what Shenzhen Airlines delivered.

Before boarding was even complete, I had already been upgraded to a complimentary seat in the first row of the economy cabin. As soon as I sat down, one of the flight attendants warmly greeted me by name and immediately offered to store my backpack, so I did not have to worry about finding space in the overhead bins.

Shortly afterwards, I was served a welcome drink consisting of fragrant jasmine tea, presented with my name on it. Throughout the flight, the crew continued to offer generous refills without me having to ask.

The thoughtful touches continued with a personalized amenity bag containing an eye mask and a hand sanitizer wipe. I also received a blanket, a pair of slippers and a complimentary bottle of water, items that were not distributed to the other passengers in the cabin.
The cabin crew remained attentive, friendly and genuinely welcoming throughout the flight. Their hospitality transformed what would normally be an ordinary domestic journey into something that felt genuinely special. It was simply an outstanding display of customer service.
Cabin and Seats
The cabin felt modern, clean and well maintained. Shenzhen Airlines has invested in creating an attractive interior that feels contemporary without being flashy.

The economy seats were comfortable with good cushioning, making the flight enjoyable even without any premium cabin features. For a domestic service, the overall cabin environment was excellent.
Food and Drinks
A complimentary meal was served during the flight, with chicken being the only available option on this particular service. The meal was surprisingly enjoyable and certainly exceeded expectations for a relatively short domestic flight.

Passengers were also offered Pepsi, juice and water with the meal. Coming from Europe, where many airlines provide no complimentary food or drinks on comparable Schengen routes, Shenzhen Airlines’ catering felt especially generous.
Final Verdict
Shenzhen Airlines delivered one of the most impressive domestic economy class experiences I have had. The modern cabin, comfortable seating and complimentary catering already make it a competitive choice for travel within China.
What truly sets the airline apart, however, is its outstanding recognition of Star Alliance Gold members. From the complimentary front-row seat and personalized welcome to the exceptional service from the cabin crew, the experience felt remarkably premium despite flying in economy class.
If you hold Star Alliance Gold status, Shenzhen Airlines is an airline well worth choosing for domestic travel in China. Even without elite status, passengers can still expect a comfortable full-service experience that compares very favorably with many domestic airlines around the world.
