China Eastern Airlines Domestic Economy Class Review

China Eastern Airlines is one of China’s largest carriers and a major member of the SkyTeam alliance. With an extensive domestic network connecting major cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Kunming, it is an excellent choice for both business and leisure travelers. This review covers the complete experience of flying China Eastern Airlines domestic economy class, from booking and check-in to the onboard experience and service.

Booking a China Eastern Airlines Domestic Flight

One should always book through China Eastern Airlines website. The reason I say this is that this allows you to change your flight for free, and even upgrade to business class for free later on (I have gotten a free upgrade option on 60% of my flights already). :-O

One interesting aspect of the booking process is that the airline requires enrollment in its Eastern Miles frequent flyer program. While this may seem inconvenient, it should not discourage travelers who collect miles with another SkyTeam carrier. After completing the reservation, it is possible to access the booking and replace the Eastern Miles number with any eligible SkyTeam frequent flyer account.

Check-In Experience at Shanghai Pudong Airport

The domestic check-in process at Shanghai Pudong International Airport is surprisingly efficient. Rather than searching for specific counters assigned to individual flights, travelers can use any counter within the designated domestic check-in area. This simplifies the airport experience considerably, especially for visitors unfamiliar with Chinese airports.

Check-in for all domestic flights

Travelers should also pay close attention to China’s increasingly strict regulations regarding power banks. A power bank without the required CCC (China Compulsory Certification) marking will not be accepted either in checked baggage or as a carry-on item.

Boarding Process and Sky Priority Benefits

Boarding on China Eastern domestic flights is quite well organized and conducted by boarding groups. The process moves efficiently, even on busy routes.

The boarding started punctually

For SkyTeam elite members and business class passengers, Sky Priority benefits are properly recognized and enforced. Priority boarding lanes are respected, allowing eligible travelers to board ahead of the economy cabin. This is particularly useful on high-demand domestic routes where overhead bin space can fill up quickly.

Economy Class Seats and Comfort

The economy class seating on China Eastern’s domestic fleet is adequate for shorter flights, although taller passengers may find it somewhat restrictive. The seat design features a relatively short backrest, and at 193 cm, I was unable to raise the headrest high enough to provide proper support.

I wish there was more space…

Legroom is also on the tighter side compared to some international carriers. While the space remains manageable for flights of a few hours, taller travelers may feel cramped on longer domestic sectors.

The seat design is rather unique

Cabin Crew and Service Quality

One area where China Eastern performs particularly well is cabin service. The flight attendants were consistently friendly, approachable, and proactive throughout the journey. Rather than simply observing from the galley, crew members actively assisted passengers in finding space for their luggage and helped organize the overhead compartments during boarding.

Safety procedures also appeared to be taken very seriously. Before departure, two flight attendants conducted multiple cabin inspections, carefully checking every overhead bin and ensuring that all seat belts were properly fastened. This attention to detail created a reassuring atmosphere and demonstrated a strong commitment to operational safety.

Final Verdict: Is China Eastern Economy Class Worth It?

China Eastern Airlines offers a reliable and efficient domestic travel experience within China. The airline’s extensive route network, organized airport procedures, and professional cabin crew make it a solid option for travelers flying between Chinese cities.

What stands out most is the professionalism of the cabin crew and the airline’s clear focus on safety. For travelers seeking dependable domestic transportation within China, China Eastern Airlines economy class provides a comfortable and efficient way to travel across the country.
