Shanghai Pudong Airport is quite a functional airport, and finding a lounge that makes the pre-flight experience pleasant is a welcome addition. China Eastern Airlines’ Lounge 36 turned out to be exactly that: a solid, functional and genuinely comfortable space that does what an airport lounge should do: help you relax, eat well and forget that you’re about to board a long flight.
Location
One of the biggest advantages of Lounge 36 is how easy it is to find. After clearing security, you don’t need to wander endlessly through the terminal or follow vague directions on a lounge directory. The lounge is located very close to security, making it an ideal stop whether you have a short connection or simply don’t want to walk any more than necessary.

At the entrance, you’re greeted by the staff, both human and robotic. Yes, robotic. It’s a very Shanghai moment and sets the tone immediately: this is a modern lounge that embraces efficiency and technology, but without feeling cold or impersonal.
Layout
The lounge is spread across two floors, and the separation of spaces works extremely well. The first floor is dedicated mainly to dining. This is where you’ll find the buffet, noodle bar and most of the food options. It’s a lively area, but not chaotic, and it makes sense to keep eating activity away from those who just want to relax.

The second floor is where the lounge really shines for passengers looking to unwind. This level is quieter and clearly designed for resting, drinking and waiting comfortably for your flight. By splitting the lounge this way, China Eastern has avoided one of the most common lounge problems: people trying to sleep next to clattering plates and loud conversations.

Decoration
The overall decoration of Lounge 36 is very functional, but in a good way. This isn’t a lounge that tries to impress with extravagant design or dramatic architecture. Instead, it focuses on being calm, practical, and easy to use.

The color palette is subdued, with calm and neutral tones that make the space feel relaxing rather than busy. Nothing is visually overwhelming, which is exactly what you want before a flight.

Upstairs, one of the highlights is the presence of massage chairs. These add a surprising amount of value to the lounge experience, especially after a long day of travel or before a long-haul flight. They’re not a gimmick here; they’re actually useful and well placed in the quieter part of the lounge.

Food

Food is where Lounge 36 comfortably exceeds expectations. The buffet is solid and well-rounded, offering sandwiches, salads, desserts and a selection of warm dishes. Everything is laid out clearly, and during my visit the food was well stocked and looked fresh.

The real star of the show, however, is the noodle bar. Freshly cooked noodles made to order elevate the entire lounge experience. Watching your bowl come together, choosing your toppings, and receiving something hot and satisfying is a massive step above the standard lounge buffet fare. It’s exactly the kind of offering that makes you remember a lounge fondly rather than seeing it as just a place to kill time.

Beverages
The beverage selection is fairly modest, but perfectly acceptable. Soft drinks dominate the offerings, which will surprise absolutely no one who has traveled in China. There’s plenty of Coke available, reinforcing the feeling that Coca-Cola is somehow omnipresent throughout the country.

Alcoholic options do exist, though the selection is not extensive. You won’t find a high-end cocktail menu or a wall of premium spirits here, but what’s available is fine for a casual pre-flight drink. The lounge clearly prioritizes comfort and nourishment over indulgence, and that’s reflected in the drink choices.

Conclusions
China Eastern Airlines Lounge 36 is a solid lounge in every sense of the word. It’s easy to access, logically laid out, comfortable, and offers food that genuinely stands out thanks to the noodle bar. While China Eastern Airlines itself is not a five-star airline, this lounge easily outperforms what some so-called five-star carriers offer in their own lounges. For anyone flying out of Shanghai Pudong with access to Lounge 36, it’s absolutely worth stopping by.
