EVA Air Opens Taipei-Washington Dulles As Its Tenth North American Gateway

EVA Air launches nonstop Taipei-Washington Dulles flights on June 26, giving the Star Alliance carrier a new East Coast anchor and a wider North America network from Taiwan Taoyuan.

A New Capital-To-Capital Link For EVA Air

EVA Air’s new Taipei Taoyuan-Washington Dulles route begins with four weekly Boeing 787-9 flights. The service operates from Taipei on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, with the return from Washington on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. EVA’s schedule places the westbound departure from Dulles in the early morning, arriving in Taipei the following day.

The route is important because it gives EVA its tenth passenger gateway in North America. The airline already serves major West Coast, Midwest, Canadian, and Texas markets, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago, Vancouver, and Toronto. Washington adds a politically and economically significant East Coast market with strong government, technology, academic, and corporate demand.

EVA says the new route lifts its North America flying to 98 weekly round trips, making it the Taiwanese airline with the broadest and densest North American passenger network.

Why Washington Dulles Fits EVA’s Network

Dulles is a logical addition for a Star Alliance carrier. United Airlines has a major hub at the airport, and EVA can use that position to extend its reach well beyond the Washington region. The airline also points to cooperation with Air Canada, Avianca, Copa Airlines, Alaska Airlines, JetBlue, Hawaiian Airlines, Sun Country, Southwest, and WestJet, giving passengers a wide set of onward options across the Americas.

For travelers in the U.S. capital region, the new flight removes a connection that was previously required for Taiwan. For passengers beyond Washington, it creates another way to reach Taipei and connect onward through EVA’s Asian network. That is especially useful for destinations in Japan, Southeast Asia, and Greater China where Taipei can be a convenient transfer point.

The route also has a cargo and business-travel logic. Washington is home to global institutions, multinational companies, defense and technology interests, universities, and international NGOs. Taipei-Washington may not be the largest pure leisure market, but it is exactly the kind of route where premium demand, government travel, and onward connectivity can matter.

The 787-9 Product Gives EVA Room To Compete

EVA is deploying a three-class Boeing 787-9 on the route. The aircraft includes business class, economy class, and the airline’s fourth-generation premium economy cabin, which EVA has positioned as a more upscale long-haul product.

That matters because Taipei-Washington is a long flight with a customer base likely to include business travelers, diplomats, academics, and premium leisure passengers. Premium economy can be especially useful on a route like this, giving travelers a middle option between business-class fares and standard economy.

EVA’s broader brand strength also helps. The carrier has built a reputation for consistent long-haul service, and its Star Alliance membership gives frequent flyers a familiar earning and benefits framework. For United MileagePlus and other Star Alliance members in the Washington area, the new flight adds a direct Asian option without leaving the alliance ecosystem.

A Strategic Step In Taiwan’s Long-Haul Competition

Taiwan’s long-haul airline market is becoming more competitive. EVA Air, China Airlines, and Starlux are all building international networks with different strategies and product positions. EVA’s Dulles launch reinforces its strength as the established premium network carrier with a deep North American footprint.

The timing is also helpful. Asia-North America demand remains resilient, and travelers are increasingly looking for routing alternatives that avoid congested West Coast transfers. By adding Washington, EVA is not just opening one city pair. It is strengthening Taipei’s role as a transpacific hub for a wider set of passengers across the eastern United States and Asia.
